Workplace Violence Threats

Is your office prepared to deal with workplace violence? Every business is different, but one thing remains the same: the desire to keep your most valuable assets safe, especially your employees.

The U.S. Department of Labor defines a workplace violence incident as a “verbal, written, or physically aggressive threat or attack intended to intimidate, cause injury or death to others in a place of employment.”

While these threats are motivated by a variety of reasons, they fall under one of four general categories:

Criminal Intent - The perpetrator has no legitimate business relationship to the workplace and usually enters the affected workplace to commit a robbery or other criminal act.Customer/Client - The perpetrator is either the recipient or the object of a service provided by the affected workplace or the victim. The assailant may be a current or former client, patient, customer, passenger, criminal suspect, inmate, or prisoner.

Co-worker - The perpetrator has some employment-related involvement with the affected workplace. Usually this involves an assault by a current or former employee, supervisor or manager.

Personal Relationship - The perpetrator is someone who does not work there but has or is known to have had a personal relationship with an employee, including family relationships.

This type of threat must be a high-priority concern for business owners and other stakeholders. Trends for workplace violence indicate this threat is not going away, and with the prevalence of recent mass shootings occurring across the country, it is more critical than ever to have prevention plans in place to protect your employees and staff and other business assets.

If you think one of these horrific events are unlikely to occur, consider that each year, an average of nearly 2 million U.S. workers report having been a victim of violence at work, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the number of annual workplace homicides at about 450.

Further, many employers are unaware of their obligations under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which directs employers to provide a place of employment that is “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious harm” including workplace violence caused by misfeasance of duty.

What can employers do to protect their workers from becoming victims of workplace violence? While there are many resources provided by law enforcement to employers, your organization may lack the required infrastructure or resources to internally provide for the safety of your employees. You may want to alleviate your overburdened HR department and executive staff by contracting for top-echelon security service.

No matter the reason, your best defense against workplace violence is including expertly trained, professional security guards in your overall workplace protection program.
